James H. Hilton, a native of North Carolina, received his B.S. (1923) in animal husbandry from Iowa State College (University); his M.S. (1937) from the University of Wisconsin; and was awarded a doctorate degree (1945) from Purdue University. He held a wide variety of positions, including Iowa county agent (1923-1926); Head of Dairy Production and Research at Purdue (1939-1945); and Head of Animal Husbandry (1945-1948) and Dean of Agriculture (1948-1953) at North Carolina State.
